Headlines - Some interesting features

Analyze the headlines in handout 2 - week 2 and answer the following questions

1.     What is the purpose of the headlines?
2.     What is the average length of the headlines?
3.     What tense is commonly used in the headlines? Give some examples.
4.     Is “to be” regularly used or omitted in the headlines? Give some examples.
5.     Are articles (a, an, the) regularly used or omitted? Give some examples.
Do you notice anything else special about news headlines?

    The purpose of the headlines is to get readers' attention when readers are reading to the news. The headline can be a short description of the news.

    2. What is the average length of the headlines?
    The average of length of the is just a couple second to capture a readers' attention.

    3. What tense is commonly used in the headlines? Give some examples.

    Some tenses are commonly used in the headlines:

    Present Simple,Present Continous,present perfect,Present Perfect Continuous,Past Simple.

    Examples: Hanoi is making up for celebration of 1000-year.
    Hanoi fireworks explosion killed 4 people.

    4. Is "to be" regularly used or omitted in the headlines? Give some examples.

    I think "to be" is regularly omitted in the headlines.

    5. Are articles (a, an, the) regularly used or omitted? Give some examples.

    I think "a, an, the" is regularly omitted in the headlines.

  2. Loc's observation is quite very good. Let's look at the headlines in the handout again, and see if we find out anything else interesting about them. Pay attention to the noun phrases and verbs used in the headlines.

    Simple present, simple past
    Ex: Gunmen Attack More NATO Supply Trucks in Pakistan
    South Korea Prepares New Propaganda War

    4. Is “to be” regularly used or omitted in the headlines? Give some examples.
    I think "to be "is omitted
    5. Are articles (a, an, the) regularly used or omitted? Give some examples.
    Sometimes they use article but not usually.
    Ex: A New Bid to Prop Up Economy Brings Shrugs in Japan

  4. Thanks Phuong. Let me summarize some of the main features of headlines. They
    - Briefly introduce the important message from the article.
    - Draw readers' attention sometimes by manipulating the information to create curiosity.

    Headlines are generally very short. It can be just a noun phrase or a short sentence. Headlines often use verbs in the present tense even when referring to past events. "To be is often omitted". For example: British Embassy Vehicel Attacked in Yemen. Notice the complete sentence should be: A British Embassy was attached in Yemen. Also notice "a" is omitted. Generally articles are left out in news headlines too. The purpose is to keep headlines short and yet still convey the message.
