A dual-track strategy of force and talks is the latest in what appears to be an effort by the United States to negotiate an end to the Afghan war.

Notice the highlighted words used the the above headlines. I guess everybody knows the word cloud as a noun and can easily imagine what a cloud is like in the sky. It hides part or all of the sky. It blocks our view. "Cloud" in the first headline is used as a verb metaphorically to mean "cast gloom over" like dark clouds darken the sky and indicate the prospect of rain.

"Rattle" can also be used as a noun to discribe a kind of annoying noise. As a verb in the second headline, it means "make something less stable" or "disturb".

"Nudge" litterally means to push gently especially using your elbow. Here, the verb is also used as a metaphor meaning "to urge".

You can see that many news headlines use language that appeals to your senses, imagination and emotions. Some can be really sensational. Do you have any examples sensational headlines?
